Place Setting Language and Dining Basics

The etiquette of dining with others

Greetings!

Do you ever have doubts about which bread plate is yours, what to do with your napkin, or how to signal that you’re finished with a course? Dining with others has its own language, and it's helpful to understand that language. It is easier to navigate the dining experience when you are the guest and can follow the lead of your host. But at some point, you, yourself, may be the host, whether you were designated that by originating the event, or find yourself in that position by default.

I grew up steeped in Southern etiquette and dining culture. At my grandparents’ home, moving from the “kids’ table” to the “grown-up table” was a momentous occasion, and the expectations of how to behave and communicate with others at that table were understood to come along with me. Later, while living in Europe, I took a closer look at how I dined and developed a deep interest in the why behind these practices, comparing them to the many styles of dining etiquette found around the world. Grounded in my understanding of American dining style, I learned how to adapt to other dining situations with ease and respect.

In this course, I draw from classic etiquette and modern social settings to help you navigate any table, whether you’re attending a formal dinner, a work event, or a casual gathering with friends. When you understand the how and why behind dining norms, as either the host or the guest, you can ground yourself and move through meals with confidence, clarity, and grace, turning each meal into a memorable event.

Sincerely,

Susannah
