Whiskey Beginnings and Bourbon Basics

The fundamentals for understanding Bourbon

Greetings!

Do you ever wonder what makes a Bourbon a Bourbon, or why it’s considered the first distinctive product of the United States? Have you noticed the expansive Bourbon section on a menu or shelf and felt too overwhelmed to make a choice? Or found yourself puzzled over the terminology on a label and thus left out of a conversation?

When I first became interested in Bourbon, I couldn’t distinguish it from other brown spirits. Through several distillery tours, wide reading, and studying for the Certified Bourbon Professional designation through The Council of Whiskey Masters, I learned the what of Bourbon production. What truly captured my attention, however, was how closely the growth of the Bourbon industry is entwined with the growth of the United States itself. Those historical nuances reshaped how I understand, approach, and appreciate Bourbon altogether. I now see why Bourbon appears not only in glasses and bottles, but also in daily headlines and as a flavor in everything from cheese to shampoo to candles.

In this course, I share the fundamental principles that define Bourbon, while weaving in its lore and its deep connection to US history. Whether or not you drink this American spirit, ground yourself in the roots of Bourbon so you can navigate any label, menu, or conversation with confidence.

Sincerely,

Susannah
